Overview

The Infusion Nurse is responsible for delivering both direct and indirect nursing care to patients within the infusion unit. This role requires comprehensive knowledge of departmental and hospital policies related to the administration of infusion therapy and the overall delivery of nursing care. The position demands strong interpretive skills, clinical expertise, and the ability to assess, plan, and implement individualized infusion treatment plans.

Frequent interaction with patients, families, and a multidisciplinary clinical team is inherent to this role, requiring effective communication, critical thinking, and consultative abilities. The Infusion Nurse ensures the safe initiation, monitoring, and discontinuation of various infusion therapies while promoting patient comfort, safety, and high?quality care in alignment with organizational standards.



Responsibilities

Medication Administration & Documentation

  • Administers and documents medications accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Transcribes provider orders correctly and promptly to ensure safe care delivery.

Patient Assessment & Care Planning

  • Performs and documents accurate, timely patient assessments at admission, transfer, and discharge.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to facilitate, implement, and evaluate the Patient Plan of Care and patient outcomes.
  • Assesses patient safety needs, identifies patients requiring specific safety devices, and ensures appropriate interventions.

Clinical Skills & Technical Competence

  • Demonstrates proficient clinical and technical skills in the delivery of infusion therapy and patient care.
  • Collects adequate and properly obtained blood and urine specimens using correct technique and equipment.
  • Labels, processes, and ensures proper delivery of specimens to the laboratory or designated agencies.

Critical Thinking & Clinical Judgment

  • Evaluates diagnostic test results promptly and communicates abnormalities or critical values immediately to the provider.
  • Uses sound clinical judgment to identify changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
  • Prioritizes tasks and patient care needs based on urgency, patient condition, and available resources.
  • Utilizes independent decision-making and problem-solving to support safe patient care.

Patient Education & Communication

  • Assesses patient and family educational needs and documents education provided.
  • Delivers clear, appropriate written and verbal instructions regarding treatment plans, medications, and follow-up care.
  • Maintains frequent, effective communication with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members.

Safety & Compliance

  • Ensures all care delivery aligns with hospital and departmental policies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains an environment that supports patient safety and risk reduction.


Qualifications

  • Must complete Point of Care Testing training as part of Department Orientation.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and EMR skills
  • Previous experience with chemotherapy infusion


Credentials

  • RN - Registered Nurse
  • BLS - Basic Life Saving certification
  • OCN - Oncology RN Certification (Preferred)


Education

  • RN, Graduate of an accredited nursing school.
